Ed Motta (BRA/D/FIN/F/NL)

Why should you actually decide whether you want to be a gourmet or a gourmand? Ed Motta, the great fusionist from Rio de Janeiro, is both. In the true and figurative sense. The nearly 45-year-old delicatessen has added "pornographic portions" to the massive body, as he joked in the bulging porgy. Musical delicatessen he not only develops himself with his stirring fusion of Brasil, Jazz, Soul and Pop, but also as a passionate record collector. His collection comprises tens of thousands of records. As a connoisseur, Motta praised local jazz greats such as Fritz Pauer and Hans Koller during his performance at Porgy & Bess.

The two Fender Rhodes pianos on stage signalled it clearly: it went back to the musical language of a new beginning, as it shaped jazz fusion and pop in the mid-1970s. Motta is a big fan of "Adult Oriented Music", the formula developed in the late seventies to reach more mature audiences. He has perfected their sublime aesthetics on his most recent, famous albums "AOR" and "Perpetual Gateways" (both on the German label Membran). His very agile European band came very close to the studio versions live. Bewitching melodies and refined harmonies tickled right away at the opener "Captain's Refusal", the story of a mysterious mutiny.
