GoGo Penguin (GB)

We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a monotonous star that has gotten lost in a galaxy hidden in a forgotten corner of a universe where there are far more galaxies than humans." These sentences come from the popular US astronomer Carl Sagan (1934-1996), who loved the adjective "humdrum" for our sun, so he once called the earth "a hunk of rock and metal that circles a humdrum star". In this variant one could play with the ambiguity of the words "rock" and "metal", the British jazz trio GoGo Penguin - which of course looks much more like a rock band - doesn't, the thing is too serious for him. He calls his fourth album "A Humdrum Star" and leaves it that way. The radical meaninglessness in space is also something serious, it relativizes the feelings that threaten to burst our hearts to details in a heartless universe.

The knowledge about it you think you hear from the music of GoGo Penguin, it works, even in excited and solemn moments, somehow matter-of-fact. As if she was describing inorganic events rather than organic ones. Or: the amazement that inorganic events cause in us. In this respect, she is reminiscent of the programmatically cool - mostly European - jazz that appeared on the ECM label especially in the 1970s and 1980s, such as the pieces by Northern European jazz musicians like Terje Rypdal, which often seemed like reflections on geological events. GoGo Penguin go even further and look at the stars. The fact that they release on Blue Note seems almost inappropriate, since this label stands for jazz, in which the human groove is central. And there is no groove on GoGo Penguin, even if they swing tricky. (Thomas Kramar, Die Presse, 20.02.2018)
