Herve Samb (Senegal)

Dakar-born guitarist Herve Samb, known for his collaborations with Jimmy Cliff, Meshell Ndegeocello, Salif Keïta and Lisa Simone, combines traditional Senegal sabre rhythms with jazzy improvisation in his new Teranga project. An idiosyncratic, virtuoso and at the same time harmonious mixture of West African and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, with a pinch of hiphop and the charm of Griot music. In his own compositions, Samb focuses on traditional music and lends jazz standards a West African colouring with polyrhythmic spice, this is how Coltrane's "Giant Steps" sounds amazingly Africanized.

The Sargfabrik is tucked away in the fourteenth district, well away from the usual tourist track. Built on the site of a former coffin works, it was conceived as a ‘communal self-governing housing project with an advanced cultural programme’

This is where world music in all its variety is at home. A huge range of musical groups play at the Sargfabrik every week.
What they all have in common is their individuality and the high standard of the performances.
