A special class big band highlight casts its shadow ahead: world trombone star John Fedchock meets the MUK.jazzorchestra.

John Fedchock makes you forget that the trombone is often ridiculed as being rather cumbersome. The American, who is one of the best-known jazz and big band musicians in the world, is a true virtuoso on his instrument. Precise, breathtakingly fast, with a wonderfully dark tone and always swinging hard, he played with, among others, T.S. Monk, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band, the Louie Belson Big Band and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. As a composer and arranger, he was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Instrumental Arrangement", among others, and has already recorded five albums with his John Fedchock New York Big Band, which have been celebrated by listeners and critics worldwide.

This evening he will perform some of his favorite compositions from more than 40 years of big band career as conductor and trombonist with the MUK.jazzorchestra.

The MUK.jazzorchestra is one of the two big bands at the University of Music and Art Vienna, which is one of the leading jazz training centers in Europe. The band realizes programs of a wide variety of stripes, from traditional jazz to experimental, free and cross-genre sounds. Every semester, new international instrumentalists or composers of world fame are guests to work on their music with the MUK students and bring it to the stage. Artists in residence in recent years have included John Hollenbeck, Miho Hazama, Bill Holman, Bob Mintzer, David Berger, Frank Delle/Robert Landfermann/Jonas Burgwinkel, Adrian Mears and many more.
