Loyko (Russia)

The famous and worldwide successful Russian Roma Ensemble Loyko merges Gypsy, Flamenco, Classical and Jazz. The music anchored in the Russian Roma tradition covers a wide emotional spectrum, from longing melancholy and sentimentality to fiery virtuosity. The three stylistically broadly trained musicians explore the great treasure of so-called gypsy music and illuminate it again and again by integrating elements from flamenco, classical music and jazz and being inspired by the most diverse varieties of world music. Loyko has already worked with greats such as Yehudi Menuhin and Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

The Sargfabrik is tucked away in the fourteenth district, well away from the usual tourist track. Built on the site of a former coffin works, it was conceived as a ‘communal self-governing housing project with an advanced cultural programme’

This is where world music in all its variety is at home. A huge range of musical groups play at the Sargfabrik every week.
What they all have in common is their individuality and the high standard of the performances.
