NESCO International Jazz Day 2019 / Ö1-Jazz Day Rolf & Joachim Kühn Duo (D) / Birds against Hurricanes (A)

On this occasion, the ORF cultural radio station of your choice is celebrating Ö1 Jazz Day for the third time (after 2016 and 2018), the majority of whose on-air programme will be dedicated to this music on 30 April. As a highlight of the Ö1-Jazztag, two very different concerts will be broadcast live in cooperation with Porgy & Bess starting at 7.30 p.m.: The focus will be on the rare duo performance of two greats of European jazz, 89-year-old Rolf Kühn and his 75-year-old brother Joachim: two musicians who have made European jazz history and who have kept a routine-free eye for the still untested, a kind of relaxed curiosity during their long and varied careers. Before Rolf and Joachim Kühn enter the podium, the Austrian trio "Birds Against Hurricanes" with guitarist Alex Pinter will present their CD debut "fluegge", which will be released by the reactivated Ö1 jazz label. In the break between the concerts, the winner of the Ö1 Jazz Scholarship, awarded since 2018 in cooperation with the Jam Music Lab in Vienna, will also be chosen. Attention: The evening starts punctually at 19.30 o'clock!

Rolf & Joachim Kühn Duo
Together with Albert and Emil Mangelsdorff, they are the best known pair of brothers in German jazz and together they bring around 120 years of playing experience to bear. There is no question that Rolf and Joachim Kühn have rendered outstanding services to jazz in Germany like few other musicians. Even if they were less "down-to-earth" than the Mangeldorffs and spent a considerable part of their careers abroad.

Birds against Hurricanes

Inspired by Anouar Brahem's album "Le voyage de Sahar" and by music he brought home from various tours, guitarist Alex Pinter began to work on his own dream project with his own compositions. With Viola Hammer and Christian Bakanic he has found his dream line-up: the result is the debut album ":fluegge:", which will be released in 2019 and impresses with its unusual instrumentation and a very memorable melody.

Ö1 live broadcast. Punctual start of the concert!
