Ratzer / Herbert / eXtracello (A/AUS/D)

"Karl Ratzer, who has matured over the years into an expert of international format, masters the soulful-funky groove just as excellently as the strict linearity of improvisation that comes from bebop. And those who have heard him sing ballads understand what intuitive knowledge of the right tone can be in jazz." (Ljubisa Tosic, 2012)

"Peter Herbert plays his double bass in many cities/countries/earth parts/worlds with and for different artists, musicians & musicians: plays this double bass this time with & for Extracello: 4 in many respects ladies of similar nature: Connoisseurs & experts of the writings of the Brand as well as of the silent splendour: Peter Herbert & Extracello combine the deep strings to a feast of the wide horizon, to a feast of sound-tolerant variety & lustful because unintentional curiosity." (Renald Deppe, 2013)

The charismatic guitarist & soulful singer Karl Ratzer wants to know it again. After his fabulous work with his international septet (You've changed), after an excellent recording with his superb trio (My Time) he now enters chamber music terrain - with top-class string colleagues. Karl Ratzer / Peter Herbert & Extracello are a wonderful collective, far away from any clichés that sometimes cling to strings in jazz and that are not easy to get rid of. It's not modern classical music that's up for discussion here, but classical modern music from the perspective of a jazz-oriented attitude to music, as it's probably seldom heard in concert halls (but all the more so to be heard!). Detached from the strict "occidental" academism, the 6 musicians walk on dreamwalking paths towards a musical meta-level, which has nothing to do with stressful or even endeavoured formalism, but rather with the expression of a light-footed and self-evident musical conversation and with a brash view across genre plate borders!

Look forward to this wonderful cooperation and accompany Sir Karl Ratzer on his hopefully long lasting musical string journey. The best is yet to come! (Christoph Huber, Porgy & Bess, May 2016)
