The farmer as a millionaire

The former poor farmer Fortunatus Wurzel becomes rich through a treasure, which his envy played into his hands, and becomes word-breakable towards the fairy Lakrimosa. In view of the new wealth, Wurzel no longer thinks of keeping his promise to marry his daughter Lottchen to a poor fellow to whom she gave her heart. But without this wedding Lakrimosa, Lottchen's biological mother, cannot be released from her exile. In her despair she asks her friends in the fairy world for help.

Ferdinand Raimund tells in his fairy tale a story about unexpected wealth and the resulting rapid loss of morality and decency. The scene of the farewell of the youth with the wonderful duet "Brüderlein fein" as well as the ash song of Fortunatus Wurzel, who sank down to the ash man, are still famous today. Director Josef E. Köpplinger will use the original score of Josef Drechsler in his production.

Josef E. Köpplinger, who had staged Der Gockel by Georges Feydeau very musically at the Theater in der Josefstadt 2015, will also accentuate Ferdinand Raimund's Couplets in his staging of Der Bauer as a millionaire in a skilful manner.

Theater in der Josefstadt

The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. It was founded in 1788 and is the oldest still performing theater in Vienna. It is often referred to colloquially as simply Die Josefstadt.

Following remodeling and rebuilding in 1822 — celebrated by the performance of the overture Die Weihe des Hauses ('Consecration of the House') by Beethoven — opera was staged there including Meyerbeer and Wagner. From 1858 onwards the theatre gave up opera and instead concentrated on straight theatre and comedy.
