The Brian Marsella Trio formed in 2016 initially as interpreters of John Zorn’s Bagatelles. Kenny Wollesen (drums) and Trevor Dunn (bass) are long-time collaborators of Zorn and were the perfect rhythm section to back Marsella who first started performing Zorn’s Bagatelles in a solo piano setting. Zorn asked Marsella, “How would you like to do a trio set of Bagatelles? What do you think of playing with Kenny Wollesen and Trevor Dunn?” The rest, they say, is history. The trio has now recorded 6 albums that chronicles the bands growth and telepathy as improvisers. Their debut album, BUER: The Book of Angels Vol 31 (2017) was followed by Intersection of Dissections (featuring Marsella’s original compositions), The Hierophant (2019), Calculus (2020), John Zorn’ Bagatelles Vol 6 (2021) and Meditations on the Tarot (2021). The trio is known for its highly energetic performances that jumps from free jazz excursions, to straight-ahead swinging to world grooves all while having a cinematic quality of story-telling. Since their first performance at The Stone in 2016, The Brian Marsella Trio has performed in venues and festivals across the globe including The Village Vanguard, Porgy and Bess, Bimhuis, Elbphilharmonie, and the Molde, Sarajevo, North Sea, Saalfelden, and Jazz à Vienne Festivals.
