The works of the 1920s and 30s are imbued with a deep sense of longing. A longing for love, for fun, for affection, for a home, for a good drink, for friendship, for empathy. A complicated mixture of desires that shape life and make it worth living.

In her new program “Here&There,” Ethel Merhaut revives songs that, despite being nearly 100 years old, have lost none of their intensity and frivolity. Especially now, in times of social and political upheaval, the lyrics feel strikingly relevant.

The ensemble around Ethel Merhaut virtuously weaves together many stylistic genres into a unique sound world while remaining true to the original music in its elegance and precision.

The album is a call to joy of life and courage to live, and it simultaneously reminds us of the diverse music scene before the Nazis came to power.

Ethel Merhaut cannot be put in a box. Coming from classical singing, she infuses elements of jazz and swing into her voice, breathing new life into the songs of the 1920s and 30s with charm and feminine modernity. (Press text)
