Wynton Marsalis will have to think about practicing again, because judging by the reactions of the audience, a superstar of the traditional is announced here. (Ljubisa Tosic, The Standard)
Legendary Ray Brown, but also his fans all over the world, have long since awarded him the luxury award "The Genius" - and anyone who has seen and heard the mid-thirties James Morrison from Australia live can confirm that the hymns of praise on these grandiose jazz musicians are not an advertising fad, but correspond to reality. In addition to its trumpet (including Bach trumpet), the flexible multi-virtuoso includes the trombone, euphonium, flugelhorn, saxophone, piano and the digital trumpet, which has been in existence since 1982 - visually like an extended telephone receiver, and through the artistry of Master Morrison, a mix of pan flute parts and Hammondor organ sound.
Salzburger Nachrichten: Anything Morrison does, be it trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone or tuba (which he borrowed from an ensemble member for a short time), turns into brilliant brass gold. The fantasy of this multi-musician is almost unlimited, who invents his kind words in a relaxed chatter tone (the list of the program sequence he has buried somewhere on his desk filled with notes or not) as if from the moment. This creates an atmosphere of serene calmness and surprising effects, also in combination with the animated band.
Morrison even cuts a masterful figure on the piano - and at the same time can rely on a brilliant dialogue partner on bass. Always in a humorous dialogue (with Thelonious Monk), he does it in one person at the end and perfect like everything else: in the right hand the trumpet, the left in a duo accompanying on the piano keyboard. It was a surprise that the circus bravura act was followed by real standing ovations. (Press release)
