Tsombanis4, the quartet founded by the renowned tenor saxophonist Anna Tsombanis, is causing a sensation with its unusual line-up. With two double basses, saxophone and drums, the composer, who is known for her preference for low notes, explores the sound possibilities of the lower register and gives it plenty of space. She is joined by the Swiss bassist Andreas Waelti and the Austrian bassistist Beate Wiesinger, whose different timbres harmonise perfectly and complement each other. The ensemble is carried by drummer Herbert Pirker, whose energetic playing has a lasting impact on the sound of the quartet, while Anna Tsombanis explores new spheres with her full and warm tenor sound. The result is an explosive mixture of spontaneous communication and energetic playing in which the roots of traditional jazz can still be clearly felt.
