Listen to Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and his Cantique de Jean Racine on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death in St Stephen's Cathedral.
Written between the death of his father and that of his mother, it is a vision of death not in the sense of a sombre funeral, but of a happy relief. "It is as gentle as I am," Fauré himself later stated. The Requiem is Fauré's best-known and most frequently performed work both inside and outside France; it had a far-reaching effect on the development of French music.
Under the direction of Gerald Wirth, President and Artistic Director of the Vienna Boys' Choir, the masterpiece will be intensively worked on by choir singers from around the world in several workshops as part of the Sing Along! Choir Festival. The crowning finale is the performance with renowned soloists and the Vienna Cathedral Orchestra in St. Stephen's Cathedral.
