More Christmas spirit, more Vienna, and more contemplation cannot be found when the Vienna Symphony Orchestra returns to the spectacular setting of St. Stephen's Cathedral for the grand Advent concert on December 7.
The program, conducted by the orchestra's first guest conductor, Marie Jacquot, spans from Michael Praetorius ("Es ist ein Ros entsprungen") to Andrew Lloyd Webber ("Pie Jesu") in terms of time, and from Leopold Mozart's Austria to Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Russia ("Nutcracker" and "Snowflake Waltz"), further into the USA with Albert Malotte and into France with Adolphe Adam ("Cantique de Noël").
Soprano Fatma Said, tenor Jonathan Tetelman, and the Singverein of the Society of Friends of Music take the audience on a musical journey through Christmas traditions from around the world. The program naturally includes the great Christmas classics such as Bach's "Jesus bleibet meine Freude," William Gomez's "Ave Maria," and, for the grand finale, the song "O du fröhliche" ("O, You Joyful").
