Jonas Kaufmann & Helmut Deutsch – Songs in the Park

An extraordinary program in Vienna's Theater im Park: classical songs, evergreens from operettas and Viennese delicacies, performed by two artists who have been inspiring the world over as ambassadors of song for many years, most recently with an extraordinary scenic representation of Schubert's Swan Song in New York.
Jonas Kaufmann always had a soft spot for Viennese: thanks to his grandparents in Tyrol, he usually got more exposure to Austrian television programs than to German ones. Hence his love for Viennese music, from Johann Strauss to Hermann Leopoldi, his admiration for the art of Hans Moser and Peter Alexander. He is particularly fond of the “Viennese song” genre because of its incredible diversity, for him it is essentially a “sounding cultural history of Vienna”.
By the way, Helmut Deutsch was the first person with whom he worked on the Viennese idiom. That was 30 years ago, the “Viennese insult” has long since become second nature to him, and even for “real” Viennese it is astonishing how Jonas Kaufmann from Munich has mastered Viennese; His performances of “I have to be in Grinzing again”, “I am a quiet reveler” and “In a small café in Hernals” were celebrated with standing ovations by the audience in the Theater im Park.
