Synopsis
The courtesan Violetta Valéry hosts a party in her Parisian salon. Her young admirer, Alfredo Germont, sings a drinking song to impress her. After Violetta suffers a coughing fit, Alfredo seizes the opportunity to explain the sincerity of his feelings for her. Unsure of her own emotions, she gives him a camellia flower as a token of affection, telling him he may return when it has withered.
Three months later, Violetta and Alfredo are living in the countryside as a carefree couple, at Violetta’s expense. When Alfredo shamefully realizes this, he sets off for Paris to find money of his own.
During this time, Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, visits Violetta and asks her to leave his son. Their improper relationship threatens the happiness of his daughter, whose respectable marriage prospects are now in jeopardy. Knowing that she is already condemned to a certain death, Violetta agrees. She is suffering from consumption. Deeply moved by her sincerity and devotion, Germont takes his leave.
When Alfredo returns, he finds Violetta distraught and writing a letter. She quickly departs, and a messenger hands Alfredo her farewell letter. Desperate, he reads that she has decided to return to her former way of life and renounce him.
Germont tries to comfort his son, but to no avail. After a public scandal at a party, where Alfredo cruelly insults Violetta out of jealousy, she withdraws from him for good.
Months later, Violetta’s condition deteriorates dramatically. Germont writes to her, explaining that he has told Alfredo about their agreement and that Alfredo now intends to hurry back to her. Violetta knows they can no longer share a future and bids farewell to both her love and her life.
Suddenly, Alfredo rushes in, and a brief rekindling of happiness seems to restore all hope. Germont arrives and affirms their love, but it is too late. Violetta gives Alfredo her portrait, asking him to find a new bride and new happiness. In return, she promises to pray for him in heaven. She rises one last time, only to meet her dea
